After two pleasant days in St. Augustine, we head north to Fernandina which is a 4.5 hour ride and yes, we’re still in Florida!
It was a nice travel day. There were miles and miles of canals with beautiful homes, often on both sides. The canals were narrow and it wasn’t clear whether we should zip along at our normal cruise or reduce to our minimal wake speed. Out of respect for our boat’s name, we went slow….mostly.
You can see from some of the pictures some of the landscape contains more marsh and is beginning to resemble the low lands of Georgia. And the tides are now in the 5 foot range and come with significant currents! Route planning and docking now includes a check of the tide tables for some sections and marinas.
There was a storm coming so we wanted to be finished with our travel no later than 2pm. We managed to secure our lines before 1pm. Some of the pictures give you an idea of just how windy it got. Fortunately a large yacht docked just upwind, providing great shelter for us!
That yacht left and an even larger one (165′) took it’s place!! They pumped 4,500 gallons, at $5 each, into that beast!
We’ve come to like towns like Fernandina where the marina/town dock are key to its character. Everything is a short walk. In Teri speak, the ice-cream is close!
Next stop will be an anchorage in Georgia!
