Day 25 & 26 – Carolina Beach, NC to Beaufort, NC

Fun fact, Beaufort, NC and Beaufort, SC have the same spelling and are named for the same person! To remove confusion the cities agreed on different pronunciations. And who was this guy? Mr. Beaufort…right? Nope, Henry Somerset! LOL! I did a quick search: Ancient English guy pictured wearing a dress like costume and a wig. I’m out.

Today’s mileage was more than normal at 94 miles, but it didn’t seem long. We’ve really begun to appreciate and enjoy coastal Carolina!

The days highlight arrived early when we came upon a really long dredging unit. You can see it far ahead in one of the pictures. They get an “A” for anxiety since most often they are found in narrow, shallow channels.  The operators are required to respond on the radio, which is all good, but I don’t think the author of the requirement included any “response time” language. I hailed and hailed but received nothing but silence. OK, polite boater Plan A was a fail. Plan B….I told them I would slow pass on their port side, which to my surprise got a sudden confirmation and thank you! Lesson learned…less talking, more doing! But the fun wasn’t over.  Before we could complete our pass,  an imposing…almost terrifying  group of military catamaran boats, just like our boat…NOT!…came ripping towards us! Intense! I’m glad they slowed down…cause Teri would have taken them all out, one by one, had they shown us undeserved rudeness.

Next we rolled up on the Black Pearl while waiting for a swing bridge to open.  Said bridge caused a calamity on the AGLCA forums because the Military (they operate it) decided without discussion to close it for a year! Fortunately, after some forced dialogue (rumor has it) they came up with a reasonable schedule of regular openings. After a short wait, they opened and we motored through.

Georgetown was awesome. Much of the town surrounds the dock! The marina folks were excellent! We enjoyed exploring and wouldn’t hesitate to come again.
