Day 28 – Belhaven NC to Elizabeth City NC

Another picturesque morning! Not quite as calm as the previous morning, but still pleasant and promising – prerequisites for a planned 80 mile day which includes crossing the Albemarle Sound!

For those readers who know me as a life-long boater, you might wonder why I express concern about a little bit of open water.  Quality small boats like Whalers, Formulas, SeaCrafts, and Gradys are nimble, buoyant, and built for all manner of punishment. You can almost always find a way to adjust your course and speed to accommodate whatever snotty water you get yourself into. But, imagine adding your fridge, stove, barbecue, toilet, shower and a couple beds to your favorite ride….this is a whole different kettle of fish! Promise!

As is often the case, our route started with narrow protected waterways which gradually widen large bays and this case, Albemarle Sound.  As mentioned, the weather was very good. Waves on the Sound were around a foot. A physically and mentally comfortable exercise.

On our way up the Pasquotank River to Elizabeth City we saw a huge structure which turned out to be a blimp or dirigible manufacturing plant. Cool! A local told us the factories customers were mostly governments.

We chose a free dock at Elizabeth City which was the Town dock. Great location except the wind came up causing a little turbulence. We were well-tied and fendered so, no issues.

Years ago a couple of charitable boaters (Joe and Fred) who lived here began assisting cruisers who stopped at the town docks. They assisted with lines and other needs typical of boaters on the move. After assisting at the dock, they would provide a rosebud and refreshments! Others, inspired by their kindness and hospitality, joined the group which eventually became known as the, “Rose Buddies”. The groups generosity and friendliness caused the Town to adopt the slogan, “The City of Hospitality”…or something like that. Eventually the founders passed away and the group slowly dwindled. But, there are a few who are working to revitalize the tradition.  We had a brief conversation with two of them. They were articulate and enthusiastic about their mission. It’s exciting to see the group making a comeback!!

The town was fun! There was a music festival happening alongside the dock. One after another, all of the towns high school jazz bands were tapping out classics.

Plenty of breweries, coffee shops, and places to eat.

The next morning was very foggy!  Appropriate for our next leg which takes us into the Dismal Swamp!
